What is AmSAT?

The American Society for the Alexander Technique (AmSAT) is the largest professional association of certified Alexander Technique teachers in the United States.

AmSAT's mission is to establish the Alexander Technique as a basic and recognized resource for health, productivity, and well-being.

AmSAT is an educational, nonsectarian, nondiscriminatory organization incorporated in New York as a general not-for-profit corporation. It has been determined to be federally tax exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended.

AmSAT maintains the nation's highest standards for teacher training, certification and membership and maintains affiliation with similar credentialing bodies worldwide. Since its formation in 1987, over 1000 teachers have completed the rigorous training process to earn AmSAT certification.

AmSAT is affiliated with the Alexander Technique Affiliated Societies (ATAS), twenty national societies of teachers of the Alexander Technique committed to supporting the highest standards of teaching, professional training and conduct worldwide.

In addition to providing educational support services for its members, AmSAT is a resource for information about the Alexander Technique.

  • To find an AmSAT-certified teacher, please use the search feature on our website or contact our office by email (info@AmSATonline.org) or phone (800-473-0620).
  • Mailing address: 11 West Monument Avenue, Suite 510, Dayton, OH 45402

AmSAT also supports research on the Alexander Technique by its members. The AmSAT Research Committee was formed in 2012 to create and administer a grant program funding research projects by teaching members of AmSAT. Award recipients to date can be found here. Teacher Certification Requirements

The training requirements for AmSAT teacher certification are specified in AmSAT's Bylaws and include the completion of 1,600 hours of training over a minimum of three years at an AmSAT-approved Teacher Training Course or an equivalent Bylaw-compliant training. AmSAT Teacher Training Courses maintain a five-to-one student/teacher ratio. The AmSAT Teacher Certification Requirements can be found here . More information about AmSAT teacher training programs can be found here.

To receive Board approval, an AmSAT Teacher Training Course must meet the requirements of the Training Approval Committee (TAC). The TAC periodically reevaluates each of AmSAT's teacher training programs and their directors.
